I have read almost everything by McEwan, starting with his first collection of short stories in the 70s, and look forward to seeing how he weaves a story around climate change -- especially as that's what I'm supposed to be doing for my next book. And a couple of other novels, including one of Maggie Gee's. Margaret Atwood is another novelist who tries to communicate environmental concern - I didnt post a review of her latest, The Year of the Flood, on Hot Topic because it didn't bear specifically on climate change, though I might reconsider that since it was about the human response to the end of things. Incidentally, Attwood is one of the novelists Bryson presses into service in his book - she has a delightful chapter on fictional depictions of mad scientists, concluding: "Perhaps, by imagining mad scientists and then letting them do their worst within the boundaries of our fictions, we hope to keep the real ones sane." It's funny isn't it that it's attracted a grand total of NO comments to date; whereas I think it's one of the most important articles you've put out recently. To me the article, and lack of comment, highlights the distance art is separated from science when it comes to global warming. This mirrors my occasional harangues about the nonsensical way we're handling the sociological aspects of climate change debate and the counter productivity of sitting back and arguing the science. We are going to have to come up with better ways to communicate with the public if there's going to be any chance of catching up with climate change. This isn't going to involve science, it's likely it will involve "art". Bryan I’m glad you included this review here.
