George, I don’t know that Gore is as soft on consumption as you think. “Material consumption in our society has reached absurd levels.” This in the context of a discussion of what makes for happiness in which he comments that the US has tripled its economic output over the last half-century, with absolutely no gain in the general sense of well-being. He writes of the frenzy of production and consumption in the US resulting in astonishing levels of production of waste.

I don’t think we can do it without looking at the demand side. Giving up the most polluting forms of consumption. And for someone like Al Gore, reducing consumption is unthinkable – it’s all soft solutions. I’m glad he raised the profile, but his solutions will only get us so far.

It all seems so obvious really. So why DO we have politicians who can efficient light bulbs, think that coal is “sexy”, and are hell bent in building roads instead of promoting public transport??
I’ve just been reading “The Democracy Sham” (how globalisation devalues your vote) by Bryan Gould. I think that helps to explain why!
