Actually, we appear to be in the last ice age for quite some time.

The effect of Milankovitch cycles and tectonic movements have been usurped by humanity's greenhouse gas emisions, and all bets are off.

R2D2, the book is well aware of what our normal status might be as an interglacial period in a continuing ice age, but it recognises that "we now face human-induced global warming rather than an impending glaciation." The scale of our at first unwitting experiment is vast. All the more reason for calling it to a halt.
